Stoma Care Awareness

The course is set to cover the reasons why a stoma is necessary and the procedure itself that the individual has. Delegates will be supported to understand the anatomy and physiology of the digestive system and how having a stoma effects this. The individual's diet will also be discussed as alterations to nutritional intake may need to be made when a stoma is in place.

Delegates will learn and understand about the different stoma products and how we support the care and hygiene of this area.

The group will also troubleshoot possible complications to having a stoma and how we can work together to reduce some where possible paying special attention to the emotional needs to the individual who has a stoma, not just the physical needs.

By the end of the session, delegates will have gained an in-depth knowledge and be able to successfully support the physical and emotional needs to an individual with a stoma.

The course covers the following core elements:
  • Different types of stomas and why they are needed
  • Common conditions requiring a stoma
  • A and P of the digestive tract
  • Abnormalities and complications
  • Care of the stoma
  • Dietary advice
  • Examine products

I really enjoyed the emergency first aid online course. I have done a few and this one was very detailed. It probably helps it is one of my favourite subjects, but it is not too easy, it's spot on! I look forward to the practical and I'm really happy I beat the record. I expect a gold badge lol.. I learnt some new skills to remember, I never knew about Agonal breathing .... very interesting. I'm glad I'm making an impact before even starting properly. I also took load of notes for uni!
