Peg Care & Administration

This course will explain why individuals need a Percutaneous Endoscopic Gastrostomy (PEG) and why this is a necessary intervention. A PEG is passed into the individual's stomach through the abdominal wall which then accommodates medication and nutritional needs when these cannot be met orally.

The course will explain the different conditions that inhibits an individual in orally supporting their nutrition, hydration and medication such as dysphagia due to stroke or neurological issues.

Delegates will understand the theory of safe use and the maintenance of the PEG tube and site, and then will take part in the practical task of caring for the tube, site, and administration of nutritional feeds, fluids and medications. The course will also cover the implications of a PEG and how excellent oral care, hydration and personal care of the site is important.

Towards the end of the training session, all delegates will be individually assessed by our trainer and RGN so that everyone attending can come away from training completely confident with using their new skill set with the individuals they care for.

The course covers the following core elements:
  • What a PEG is and why it is used
  • Basic A and P of the digestive system
  • Administration via PEG
  • Symptoms of Dysphagia
  • Administration of feed and flushes
  • Mouth care
  • Potential complications

I really enjoyed the emergency first aid online course. I have done a few and this one was very detailed. It probably helps it is one of my favourite subjects, but it is not too easy, it's spot on! I look forward to the practical and I'm really happy I beat the record. I expect a gold badge lol.. I learnt some new skills to remember, I never knew about Agonal breathing .... very interesting. I'm glad I'm making an impact before even starting properly. I also took load of notes for uni!

Both of the trainers I have met have made the training interesting & informative, & I learn something new every time.
