Bladder Washouts

Those with long term catheters, may require routine bladder washouts which help to reduce the build-up of sediment within the bladder that can cause blockages within the tubing. We all produce sediment in our bladders, poor nutrition and hydration can have a direct impact on how much we produce. Individuals who do not have catheters pass this when urine is passed naturally, however when a catheter is in place, this sediment can collect in and around the tubing which inhibits good urine flow which can cause health implications.

Within this course, we will discuss the anatomy and physiology and cases where bladder washouts are required. We will also look at the advantages, disadvantages and some controversial medical professional's opinions surrounding the washouts and keeping our bladder healthy.

The procedure of how to perform bladder washouts will then be demonstrated and all delegates will have the opportunity to practise this technique before performing this from start to finish as part of your assessment with our trainer and RGN.

All delegates will leave training fully aware of this technique and how to safely perform their newly learnt skill.

The course covers the following core elements:
  • What catheterisation is and why it is done
  • Techniques and reasons for washouts
  • Advantages and disadvantages of bladder washouts
  • Procedures and sources needed
  • When caution should be used

I really enjoyed the emergency first aid online course. I have done a few and this one was very detailed. It probably helps it is one of my favourite subjects, but it is not too easy, it's spot on! I look forward to the practical and I'm really happy I beat the record. I expect a gold badge lol.. I learnt some new skills to remember, I never knew about Agonal breathing .... very interesting. I'm glad I'm making an impact before even starting properly. I also took load of notes for uni!

Both of the trainers I have met have made the training interesting & informative, & I learn something new every time.
